If you ask most people who have met the Divas, they will tell you that we are trouble. And while we simply can’t deny that, we are capable of doing good deeds; it’s all about balance 😉
But why were we at this fabulous charitable gala? Is it because we’re fabulous? Perhaps it is because we’re charitable? Stefano Vito Ruvo was diagnosed with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), a condition where his brain forgets to remind his lungs to breathe. Stefano’s cousin, Jennifer Ruvo, decided to raise money for the Complex Care Services at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. This department provides support to families and children by providing equipment, treatments and services that are not always covered by private or public organizations. Montreall.com, which includes our darling Sweet Pea, partnered up with the SVR Children’s Foundation and Tanya-Kay to throw the Cocktails and Couture for a Cause charity gala, and of course, we had to get involved.
The event was held at La Toundra on Parc Jean Drapeau. We had to drive on the Jacques Villeneuve race track in order to reach the event venue. All the while, we tried not to run over any of the cyclists who feared for their own lives when we ended up driving on their side of the track – our bad!
As we arrived, it’s no surprise that we made a beeline for the oyster station manned by everyone’s favourite shucker, Jason Nagy. And good thing we did as he was already on his last box of oysters! Garnished simply with lemon, lime or the traditional mignonette, we were in heaven!
We found Sweet Pea and the Montreall.com team as well as Tanya-Kay, and P’tit Soeur and other friends. We headed for the bar where expert mixologist Brahm Mauer effortlessly mixed three cocktails, our favourite being the Green Go. Though we have a love/hate relationship with tequila, this drink was perfect, right down to the salted rim and the ice cubes with cranberries inside.
We had just sampled the new spring menu at Henri Saint-Henri so we were happy to see them at the event with a massive charcuterie platter filled with smoked bacon, crazy good beef jerky, ham and duck pâté, smoked bacon, gerkins, grainy mustard and bread by Hof Kelsten.
Diva #2 was thrilled to see a station by Dilallo Burger, a place she grew up with in her old neighbourhood. They were serving mini buck burgers, their signature burger, which has cheese, strong peppers, mustard, onion, tomatoes and the clincher, a slice of capicolla! We will definitely be making a stop at this Ville Émard institution in the near future!
Nicolina Servello is a Montreal caterer and food stylist who created quite the nuts and dried fruit station at the Cocktails and Couture for a Cause gala. It was presented whimsically, with plenty of variety in silver dishes and bowls. The nuts were fresh, seasoned in different ways and a great salty accompaniment to the sweeter cocktails.
We also tried a porchetta sandwich by Épik, a boutique hotel with a bistro in Old Montreal. This food station was actually a carving station where a lovely gentleman carved the porchetta and prepared a sandwich on a soft bun. Diva #2 loves a man who carves meat and she was soon swooning and had to sit down in his presence.
We also had a plate of Anabel’s famous fried gnocchi poutine, with lardons and peas in a rich crab gravy. This poutine was even studded with a dose of healthy greens! We have been to Anabel a few times so we knew what to expect. At this point we were rather full but there is always room for dessert and a few more cocktails!
There were plenty of desserts to indulge in including delicious gelato from La Fontana and delicious nachos and caramel popcorn, that perfect sweet n’ salty mix, from Bad Monkey Popcorn. We particularly loved the strawberry shortcake from Lafrenaie which was creamy, light and fresh. And they also served mini tiramisus that we did not have a chance to indulge in!
And we definitely treated ourselves with an oreo doughnut from Trou de Beigne and our favourite, the dark chocolate and espresso – an absolute must! We fell in love with Trou de Beigne when Whitey brought over a dozen for a dinner party a few years ago, and we have seen them popping up in Montreal coffee shops ever since. Caffé San Simeon was in charge of espressos that night, and there are very few Montreal cafés that are as good as that gem.
The night was a success for the SVR Children’s Foundation. Along with the delicious food and drink, there was a fashion show by designer Antoinette Di Carlo of Di Carlo Couture, as well as a raffle and silent auction.
We left the event feeling good about ourselves, loving Montreal restaurants and people who got together to support such a good cause, and happy that we met Stefano Vito Ruvo, the star of the night.
