“We’re not inventing anything here” said one of the brothers who owns Macbar et Fromage. True, they may not have invented the concept of fabulous mac n’ cheese dishes stuffed full of ingredients, but they definitely helped perfect it. Located in the Gay Village, the casual atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for someone looking for a simple bite to eat that is definitely not fast food.
Macbar et Fromage allows you to get real food for fast food prices! Their portions are large, and they don’t skimp out on the cheese. Nothing is worse than a mac n’ cheese that isn’t cheesy enough. Fret not, this is not the case at Macbar et Fromage, every bite is gooey and cheesy – just the way we like it!
We started our meal with meatballs in a marinara sauce. Three large meatballs were tender, seasoned well and in a simple marinara sauce. They also brought us one of their evening specials which was a refreshing watermelon salad with homemade croutons, seasoned lightly with plenty of oregano for that Mediterranean feel. With all the mac n’ cheese we were soon going to eat, a light salad was perfect!
Everyone is talking about the cheeseburger mac at Macbar et Fromage and now we know why. Reminiscent of a Big Mac from you-know-where it actually tasted EXACTLY like a Big Mac. Cheddar cheese, seasoned minced meat with iceberg lettuce, red onions and that famous Big Mac sauce made for a creamy delight. This dish is going to be popular with the boozy late night crowd who wants to get their junk food fix.
Our favourite mac n’ cheese was the pesto and tomatoes that also had brie along their usual cheddar cheese. Sautéed mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and tasty pesto made up this delicious dish. We took some to eat at work the next day because the dish was so rich and decadent that we couldn’t finish it in one sitting. We loved it!
On Mondays your mac n’ cheese at Macbar et Fromage is 7$ when you buy a cocktail after 5 pm and on Thursdays certain cocktails are 5$ after 5 pm. We also tried the smoked bacon and honey mac and cheese with caramelized onions, fresh herbs and a panko crust au gratin. Mac n’ cheese and bacon go together like peanut butter and jelly!
Besides Mac n’ Cheese there are sandwiches, burgers and of course… grilled cheese at Macbar et Fromage! And what cheese delight did we have for dessert? We fell in love with their Xango dessert which was a cannoli like shell stuffed with creamy caramel ricotta in a dulce de leche style. It was amazing!
Macbar et Fromage is definitely a one stop shop for cheese lovers. With great service, a trendy atmosphere, full bar license and more than affordable mac n’ cheese dishes, you’ll definitely be coming back time and time again to try all the mac n’ cheeses on their extensive menu.
