Studies have shown that a shortened work week improves productivity. In order to prove this, Diva #2 and the Firm put this theory to the test by taking a day off from work, midweek. After our respective errands, we met for lunch at an unlikely spot on the busy street of Côte des Neiges. Amongst the fast food joints, tucked away is a French bistro called Les Tontons Flingueurs.
Most French bistros offer salmon tartare and most dishes are served the same way with a few variations. At Les Tontons Flingueurs, they added a little chili to the salmon tartare for a nice subtle kick of heat which was great with the fish that was at room temperature (as it should be). The tartare was also tossed with parsley and shallots which kept the dish light and fresh which is exactly what you expect with a good quality salmon tartare. It was served with fries though you have the choice of substituting your fries for a salad. The fries are crisp and are served with mayo.
While risotto may not be a typical French dish, the description was hard to resist. A golden yellow plate was presented with a very generous amount of calamari. The saffron yellow rice was perfectly cooked and creamy, and the calamari, which included the tentacles, was very tender. You could still see some strands of bright red saffron poking through the rice.
A little dessert to end our meal was necessary and the lemon tart was lovely. The crust wasn’t crispy which made it easy to cut into with a fork and the lemon filling was not overly tart, though the lemon was very pronounced and bright.
Les Tontons Flingueurs is a French bistro with flair, but with classic bistro dishes like tartare, escargots, duck, bavette and more, you’re sure to fall in love with it and seek it out. The décor is just right with distressed wooden floors, marble and iron tables and plenty of dark colours, exactly what you would expect in a French bistro.
