Lattuca BBQ

Vegans, if you’re easily offended, look away. If you’re curious, and we know you are, take a good look at what delicious looks like. Lattuca BBQ held a big party with everyone out in force to support Chef John Lattuca, the USA Jack Daniels Brisket Champ! The Coppola wine was flowing along with beer, and everyone was in a good mood despite the cold weather!

Exposed wood beams, brick walls and wooden tables were soon filled with delicious smelling food cooked over apple wood and maple wood, using the low and slow method. While there are several types of BBQ styles, Lattuca BBQ embraces the Texan style which means there’s no sauce (but you can ask for some if you’re so inclined).

The side dishes stood up to the big flavours of the meat. The mac n’ cheese was creamy and had a little kick with a dusting of paprika, the coleslaw was light, fresh and crunchy, and the baked beans were creamy and smoky. Everything that you would want from a good ol’ Southern BBQ.

The barbecue meat at Lattuca BBQ is on another level. They have pork and beef ribs, pulled pork, brisket and more. The pulled pork is tender, flavourful and though we didn’t get a chance to try it as a sandwich, we can only imagine how good it would taste sandwiched between two pieces of bread with all the fixings!

The beef ribs are huge, Flintstone-like portions, with a thicker layer of fat that bastes the meat as it cooks. But it’s the pork ribs that stole the show. Meaty and delicious, the top skin of the pork ribs formed a hard candy-like coating that gave it a nice sweet and salty taste that made you lick your fingers clean!

You’ll realize there is a reason John Lattuca won the Jack Daniels Brisket championship once you take a bite of his brisket. It is ridiculously good, moist, flavourful with a great bark on it. And all that was used for seasoning was salt and pepper – Lattuca BBQ lets the meat do the talking, and it’s yelling.

If you’re able to find room for dessert, you can indulge in their key lime pie. We didn’t get a chance to try it but we know we’ll be back! It’s not always easy to find genuine American BBQ in Montreal. There are plenty of places that serve BBQ, and we’ve visited a few, but they often fall short. Our curiosity was piqued when we found out that Lattucca BBQ is run by a chef who won a major American BBQ competition. You won’t easily find better brisket and ribs in the city!
