Happening Gourmand 2017

One thing that we all have in common once the holidays are behind us is that our wallets are a little lighter! But that shouldn’t stop us from going out to enjoy great meals at wonderful restaurants.  Lucky for us, for the 10th year running, Happening Gourmand is back and eager to make your dining experience quite economical, all while pleasing your taste buds.

There are 9 restaurants in the Old Montreal area that will be offering set menus at 23$, 26$, or 30$, this little treat started on January 5th and runs until February 5th.  And this year, Happening Gourmand is collaborating with Dans la Rue, an organization that helps young people who are homeless or in unstable conditions, by donating 1$ from every meal to the organization.

We were invited to the media kickoff which gave us a chance to sample bites of the dishes from each participating restaurant.  We started at Gaspar Tavern which was serving a beet and goat cheese burger, as well as a mac n’ cheese with lardons and peas.

Verses – Goat cheese wrapped in cold zucchini strips with tomato jelly

The spread at Verses grabbed our attention with potato croquettes sitting on duck confit (sorry, we ate this too fast for a photo!) but we did snap a shot of the cool and colourful zucchini wrapped goat cheese with a tomato jelly.  The cheese was nice and salty and balanced well with the slightly sweet tomato jelly and grilled zucchini.

One of our favourite pizza places, Bevo, was serving up two Italian classics, arancini and gnocchi.  The gnocchi were served in little Chinese take-out boxes and topped with a simple meat sauce.  They were cooked perfectly, and warmed our stomachs.  The tomato sauce had a touch of sweetness which made us miss those beautiful summer months!

Maggie Oakes – Grilled peaches and quinoa salad, grilled chicken, watercress pesto and pistachios

The newest restaurant to join the Happening Gourmand fold is Maggie Oakes, located in the William Gray Hotel.  They were serving up pulled pork, cooked sous-vide style, and a refreshing quinoa salad with grilled peaches, pistachios, and a watercress pesto.  Who said healthy has to be boring and bland?  Not with this quinoa salad!

Maggie Oakes – Lemon Meringue & cake pops

Maggie Oakes also brought out dessert with cake pops and delicious mini lemon meringue pies.  The meringue was light and soft and the lemon curd was perfectly tart.  The crust was buttery but didn’t fall apart and we would have been very content eating these all night by the fireplace.

Don’t miss out on some great eats at a great price because Happening Gourmand is back with even more to offer than last year! Other participating restaurants include menus   at Kyo Bar Japonais, Méchant Boeuf, Suite 701, VP Steakhouse, and Modavie.  So celebrate the new year with some of Old Montreal’s great restaurants!
