Pizza, Prosecco and gelato, with an offer like that, how could we refuse? The Divas were invited to celebrate FCO di Fiumicino’s 2nd Anniversary Pizza Block Party. Located on Viger in downtown Montreal, FCO’s goal has been to bring authentic Italian pizza to Montreal and they’ve done just that by importing an Italian pizza oven and recruiting an experienced pizzaiola to create pizza al metro, or meter long pizzas.
We arrived at the block party already in full swing, complete with free valet parking, red carpet and hostesses dressed as flight attendants; this is apropos considering they named the pizza place after the acronym of the Roma airport, Fiumicino.
As we walked inside, we were handed a glass of Prosecco which was constantly refilled throughout the event. The sound of popping corks could be heard at a constant pace and, in a rare moment, the Divas left the Greek community and Diva #2 was instead surrounded by her people. Everyone was speaking Italian, gesturing and feeling very much at home.
The pizza oven is in full view of the customers, the pizzaoila working his magic, preparing the dough. Once the pizza was cooked and cut, it was placed on the raised counter for everyone to serve themselves and to enjoy, family style. What makes this pizza unique is the way they make it, one layer at a time.
We tried the magherita pizza after watching the pizzaoila prepare it, first ladling sauce on the dough and partially cooking it, then the pizza is taken out of the oven and the cheese is added. When it comes out of the oven again, with perfectly melted cheese, a sprinkle of fresh basil is added before cutting and serving. And this really does make a difference in the taste. Everyone knows that if you can perfect a simple classic like a Margherita pizza, then you certainly know what you’re doing. FCO makes a pretty fantastic margherita pizza! The tomato sauce was delicious and fresh, the cheese was perfectly salty and melted, and the torn basil added an intoxicating aroma. It was very fresh and bright, the crust was thin and crispy and we couldn’t stop eating it, even though Diva #2 burnt her palate. Sometimes we get excited!
The second pizza we tried was a white pizza called the boscaiola pizza made with mushrooms, sausage and mozzarella. The toppings were plentiful – the mushrooms were sliced very thinly yet were still meaty, the sausage was crumbled and the oil from the sausage was like a drizzle of spicy oil. Once again the mozzarella was perfectly melted. Simply divine!
After we filled up on pizza, we had to try the homemade gelato. Torn between the choices, we asked which were the best flavours. We were told the pistachio, which we already had our eye on, as well as the newest flavour, salted caramel. You could taste the fact that they took the time to roast the pistachios to make the gelato. The caramel tasted like a rich, burnt caramel. Both were velvety and absolutely lovely. Other flavours included ricotta, raspberry, nutella and lemon.
As our night came to an end we contemplated going for drinks. As we were deciding where to go, our Sensei called us and we got excited but he only called to yell at us again. We managed to convince him to tell us where he was going, even though he was meeting friends that we haven’t met. He doesn’t like introducing us to new people. We’re like his dirty little secret!
We had a fun night at the pizza block party. The pizza was authentic, we got the feeling that whoever walks in at FCO is treated like family and although it was the first visit for both Divas, we will certainly be visiting again!
Bravo ragazzi, infiniti successi!
