Diva #1 and Sweet Pea don’t particularly like hanging out with girls, girls have issues, they’re sensitive and Diva #1 hates it when she can’t be her usual offensive self. That all changed when they met Chomedey’s Double D, she’s even more offensive than Diva #1, but not as unstable. So they nabbed her into their group of psychopaths and nothing has been the same since. She likes food, booze, and adventure, what more could we ask for?
If you want tasty cheap eats you go for Mexican food, and Montreal has a lot to choose from. Lately everyone has been raving about Escondite, a new little taco stand smack in the middle of downtown Montreal. Diva #1, Sweet Pea and Chomedey’s Double D went to check it out. Of course they started with cocktails, the mojito was filled with fresh pineapple and it was topped with candied pineapple for that little extra. Jalapenos were also tossed into this cocktail for an added zing, definitely a fun play on a traditional mojito.
It wouldn’t be a Mexican night without enjoying some Mezcal. At Escondite we had it with hibiscus flower syrup, and hibiscus foam, in a cocktail that tasted a bit like a flowery margarita. The Cartel de Santa was refreshing and absolutely delicious. The Michelada was a twist on a Bloody Caesar, besides Clamato, beer was poured into this large cocktail. The rest of the beer was brought to the table to top off your glass as you drank this Caesar style cocktail. Delish!
The true test at a Mexican restaurant is the guacamole. Not a large portion, the guacamole at Escondite did not disappoint, it was fresh, with plenty of fresh tomato, coriander and onion. We considered ordering a second serving but we really wanted to try a bit of everything. They came with the most delicious Morita tortilla chips, not Tostitos. Ha!
And then we got dirty… with chipotle and maple chicken wings that our waiter told us that we had to try. Finger licking good, the chicken wings were the perfect mix of sweet n’ spicy. They were perfectly lathered in the delicious sauce, and because our waiter was perfection, he brought us 6 wings instead of 5, since we were three people sharing the dish. Now that’s an attentive waiter!
Sweet Pea had been to Escondite before and she raved about their mushroom quesadilla. Her love of mushrooms brings a tear to Diva #1’s eye because when they first met she was not yet a mushroom lover. Diva #1 helped craft Sweet Pea into the (pudgier) foodie that she is today – sorry Sweet Pea, you can’t win them all! The quesadilla with sautéed mushrooms, black truffle paste and two different cheeses was absolute heaven. The black truffle taste was extremely prevalent, the Oaxaca cheese, which is a cross between Monteray Jack and Mozzarella, was gooey and perfect, and the mushrooms enhanced the taste of the black truffle. We would return for this dish alone!
We ordered way too much food, but we really wanted to try a bit of everything. In between the appetizers and our mains we ordered the Jicama salad. Jicama is a type of Mexican turnip and was tossed with greens, pickled red onions, pink grapefruit and candied papaya. The addition of the candied fruit was perfect to offset the bitter grapefruit. Bacon was a nice touch (isn’t it always?), and the guava dressing with a hint of chili made this salad even more refreshing.
There were a lot of tacos to choose from but we opted for the deep fried chicken and crispy cod taco. The deep fried chicken taco was our favourite with a chipotle sour cream sauce and corn bread croutons for an added crunch. The chicken was delicious! The fish tacos were a nice contrast, the cod was crispy, this time the sour cream based sauce had avocado in it and the cabbage slaw was crunchy and a nice addition to the crispy cod. With plenty of fresh coriander in both soft shell tacos, we were quite pleased with Escondite’s tacos.
Again our lovely waiter offered to bring us three tacos for an additional cost, he was very much on the ball, whereas we were boozy and not as quick. Dessert was simple, we ordered the chipotle churros with Nutella, these deep fried treats were as expected, tasty but nothing particularly stood out.
Escondite is a great little spot to enjoy tacos and cocktails. Their décor is fun, their ambiance lively, and we’re eager to return for that delectable mushroom quesadilla. MmmMmmm!!!
