El Gordo

It’s always nice when friends are in town for a visit!  And whenever Clouds comes back to Montreal, we always catch up over a good meal.  Such was the case recently when we ended up at El Gordo, one of the newer restaurants on Notre-Dame Ouest in Griffintown.

El Gordo, Montreal Mexican Restaurant - barEl Gordo is attached to Pizzeria Geppetto, which incidentally, are the same owners of this new taco place.  It’s a small place that seats anywhere from 40 to 45 people, with a concrete bar and seats along the Charlevoix street side with open windows.

We happened to be there for a late lunch on Sunday when they have a special on margaritas for 5$ between 3pm and 9pm.  Well, we don’t mind if we do!  With a salted rim, the margaritas were strong and refreshing – the way we like our cocktails and men!

While we sipped on our tangy and strong margaritas, we started with chips, and salsa & guacamole.  The guacamole was heavy on the lime and the cilantro and a little chunky which was perfect for dipping our chips.  It was also topped with crumbled queso fresco for a little something extra.  The salsa was good, nothing extraordinary but that didn’t stop us from finishing it!

“Brisket Taco: spicy braised beef brisket, creamy apple & cabbage slaw, pico de gallo (3)” 9$

We tried three different tacos, which come three to a serving so it’s fun to share amongst friends.  The brisket is braised which makes it tender – it melted in your mouth.  And it was spicy, not subtle, you definitely tasted the spice and we loved it!!  The tacos all had one thing in common, balance.  The purple cabbage and apple slaw was crunchy and perfect to counter the spice of the meat.

“Camarones: grilled marinated shrimps, chorizo iberico, chipotle cream, pico de gallo, guacamole (3)” 12$

You can’t go wrong with the shrimp tacos, brimming with shrimp!  The shrimp are grilled so it’s not heavy and are nestled on a thick layer of guacamole.  A nice subtle spicy kick comes from the chipotle cream and the crumbled, crunchy chorizo bits.

“Puerco taco: seared braised pork shoulder, grilled pineapple, cilantro, pico de gallo (3)” 8$

The pork tacos are very much like tacos al pastor, with all the same ingredients.  The pork, like the brisket, was braised and very tender to the point of melting in your mouth.  And they definitely don’t skimp on the amount of meat on the taco either!  The grilled pineapple chunks added the necessary sweetness to offset the spicy and cumin-heavy pork.  A definite winner for us!

El Gordo, Montreal Mexican Restaurant - tacosThough Montreal is brimming with Mexican fare, El Gordo is a great little place to grab delicious tacos and drinks at very reasonable prices.  You leave feeling relaxed and satisfied and wanting to go back again, especially after smelling the plate of nachos being delivered as we were walking out!
