Diva #1 has an affinity for pogos, it is her 4 am post-drinking snack of choice. On the flip side, Sweet Pea has a disgusting habit of eating raw hot dogs… thankfully she isn’t usually around them too often so she snacks on them infrequently. We were told by the boys at Montreall.com that it was THE place for gourmet dirty hot dogs. On one particular day, Diva #1 and Sweet Pea had spent the afternoon running errands in preparation for their Day Drunk Party. They had a Just for Laughs show at night meaning that they had just enough time for a quick bite to eat.
A window that opens onto Mont-Royal street allows you to order from outside or you can walk in to sit in the limited seating diner.. Each pork hot dog / sausage can be replaced with a veggie dog, and veggie toppings can replace the meatier toppings. Dirty Dogs is vegetarian friendly and for a 1$ surcharge you can even replace the hot dog bun with a lettuce bun. You can also order a trio with fries and a drink for a surcharge of 3$ or for other additional costs, you can add cheese, bacon, pulled pork, foie gras, steak, etc as toppings to the gourmet hot dogs. Delish!
Sweet Pea called it, when Diva #1 saw the Maurice Richard hot dog on the menu, there was no other option for her. Bourbon vanilla sausage with only the slightest hint of sweetness lay nestled in the bun. More than a generous amount of pan seared foie gras topped the sausage along with bacon, 3 year aged cheddar and caramelized onions. If the hot dog was not decadent enough the tiniest drizzle of maple syrup tied in all of the ingredients together. It was divine, filling and there was just so much foie gras!!
She also opted for a side of homemade mac and cheese that was not pre made, but instead it was made to order. It was the typical simple southern style mac n’ cheese with plenty of crispy bacon on top of the oh-so-cheesy mac. All of this was washed down with a Stewart’s cherry soda. Calorie counting? No, I don’t think so! Now this was a hot dog that we would not soon forget!
Sweet Pea stayed true to her Italian roots and ordered the James Gandolfini dog. Mild Italian sausage was topped with an aromatic and refreshing homemade bruschetta, crispy pancetta, fresh mozzarella and pesto. It was as refreshing as it sounds, a delicious hot dog that was like nothing that we expected. Once again there was plenty of fresh bruschetta and the dog itself was very filling. For 8.25$ it was a steal!
Other hot dogs that intrigued us were the Bernie Mac with mac n’ cheese tossed on top, and the Paula Deen Pogo that was a hot dog wrapped in bacon and deep fried in pancake batter. Next time Diva #1 is opting for Dirty Dogs’ pogo. How do these guys come up with these glorious dogs?
Sadly they were out of duck fat fries or we would have definitely ordered them as a side dish! But their regular fries were also very good, especially when they gave us some of their homemade spicy mayo. Other fun menu items include a poutine with sausage or a foie gras poutine, and other fatty yet delectable treats. Although we went to our Just for Laughs show smelling like the inside of a fryer, we really enjoyed our quick bite at Dirty Dogs. If you are in the Plateau area and want to try out something fun and original and quick, without spending a lot of money, then Dirty Dogs is the place for you. This is the place that you get down and dirty!
