The Quartier des Spectacle in downtown Montreal is slowly becoming a go-to spot for quality restaurants. Based in the Zero Hotel, Z Tapas Lounge is the newest restaurant to enter the Quartier des Spectacles.
The media event was filled with local Quebec celebrities as well as many media personalities including us bloggers, who love to discover new places. Z Tapas Lounge offers small plates perfect for sharing as well as a selection of main dishes.
Despite the warm weather, we started with soup, called “Rico”. It was definitely one of our favourite dishes of the night, simply bursting with flavour. A deep tomato flavour, it was garnished with avocado, thinly sliced radishes, crema, cheese and pieces of tortillas. We loved it!
Another favourite of the night was the bites of confit cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella di buffalo. The cherry tomatoes were very sweet with a small hint of tartness and the mozzarella di buffala was a great accompaniment that took on the flavour of the tomatoes but did not get lost.
We were excited when we saw the dish being put together in front of us – polenta fries with a mushroom gravy. How could you go wrong? Unfortunately, at media events, some food needs to be prepared in advance to feed the masses. We can see how this dish would be great when ordered in the restaurant and not made ahead of time to feed a media event – the potential was there but the polenta fries were too hard. After all, polenta fries to absorb the mushroom gravy and topped with a seared piece of foie gras? Sign us up!
The mini lobster rolls fell short for us. We found there was too many filler ingredients taking away from the lobster meat. And we weren’t crazy about the use of chayote but we liked that Z Tapas Lounge was trying something different instead of the expected.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try the sope with braised duck, something we’re sure we would have loved. The duck looked like it would melt in your mouth and topped with a mole-type sauce, we’re sure it was delicious. And while we were tempted to sneak off with the dish they had set up for photos, Day Jobs & the NightLife gave us a stern look that our dear Sensei would have approved of.
We moved to the covered courtyard which had plenty of seating to enjoy more wine, prosecco and of course, desserts! We tried the mini pineapple cheesecake, mini cream puffs and we couldn’t pass up the churros, all served with Nutella and fresh fruit.
Z Tapas Lounge has thrown its hat into the hotel restaurant ring which, despite having some top hotels in Montreal, the restaurants themselves often struggle. Only time will tell if Z Tapas Lounge will make the cut. Tapas are a great way to try several new dishes and have a fun night out with friends.
