Gorgeous summer days in Montreal are fleeting and because we are used to our unpredictable summers, we often overlook one of our favourite rooftop bars in the city: Terrasse Place D’Armes. Located above the Place D’Armes hotel in Old Montreal, this bar is perfect for a 5 à 7 or a late night drink. The DJ plays mood setting music, the bar has some signature cocktails, and it makes you fall in love with Montreal all over again.
The Divas headed to Terrasse Place D’Armes with Whitey, Peaches, Ms. Garde Manger and a new friend, Goldie (more on him later). We started our night with cocktails before switching to wine, which is how we usually do it! Diva #1 loved the “Fraise Parfaite” cocktail which was a very refreshing summer drink. Made with Smirnoff Double Black, almond syrup and a strawberry purée with lemon juice – it was delicious. You could barely taste the alcohol but that just meant that it would sneak up on you later.
Terrasse Place D’Armes’ signature drinks are their mojitos (perfect for summer) but they also offer varied sangria pitchers. Of course we always get a touch peckish so the Divas opted to share the charcuterie platter and the cheese platter. Terrasse Place D’Armes has a small menu of gourmet bar eats such as beef tartare, a cheeseburger, salads and other dishes. We love the idea of going to a bar for cocktails or wine and then having the option of food if we get a little hungry or too boozy. Goldie mocked us for ordering so much food for two people but he was soon joining in on the platters and eating with us – when will he learn that the Divas are always right?
The charcuterie platter was divine; a generous amount of grilled chorizo, prosciutto, blood sausage, salami and other cured meats arrived strewn across a large cutting board. Everything was absolutely delicious, fresh baguette was provided, mustard seeds and sliced dill pickles. The devilled eggs were simple and delicious and this platter was perfect with the bottle of red that we were sharing. Diva #2 interrogated Goldie and as usual one of us always goes too far…
And of course, if you’re going to order a charcuterie platter, you must also indulge in an accompanying cheese platter. Less full than the charcuterie platter, the cheese platter offered four different cheeses. Our favourite was the blue cheese and brie, but there was another interesting cheese that we couldn’t quite pin point. More fresh baguette was provided, crunchy grapes, a fruit compote and mixed nuts – our night was sinfully wonderful!
The view at Terrasse Place D’Armes is absolutely gorgeous; you should go there to watch the sunset. Our only complaint is that they stay open as late as the crowd is jamming which means that your night may be cut short if it’s a slow night or if the weather is shoddy. If you would like a gorgeous rooftop view of our city, with cocktails, beer or wine, and fun gourmet treats, head no further than Terrasse Place D’Armes. It’s the perfect spot for lunch, a date, a 5 à 7 or just to unwind – this place is what summer in Montreal is all about.
