The Divas are a handful, just ask our beloved Sensei, he blames us for his many grey hairs. That’s why we have The Firm on retainer…you know…just in case we get too rowdy and require a lawyer. Not that we would do anything illegal-ish…
We were invited to the Renoir’s Oursinade et Fruits de Mer event featuring PUR Vodka. This event will be happening every Wednesday in October. The event brings together seafood and cocktail creations concocted by PUR Vodka. Seafood and alcohol, how could we say no? Unfortunately, Diva #1 had previous plans so Diva #2 and The Firm headed to the Renoir in the Sofitel Hotel on Sherbrooke St. West in the heart of downtown Montreal.
Greeted by their ever-friendly marketing manager, Jean-Kristoff, we were quickly introduced to the man behind the vodka, Nicolas Duvernois and brand manager Stéphane Rochefort. We sat down with some fellow bloggers, in an intimate setup, and scanned the cocktail menu. We were told that the cocktails were meant to compliment the oysters and sea urchins, which they did! We tried both cocktails which had very different taste profiles. The first, Le Voyage, was the stronger of the two. Slices of red and green jalapenos floated in the chilled vodka and a piece of lemongrass complimented the lime. The second cocktail, La Brume, was refreshing and clean tasting, the sweet pear nectar and orange bitters playing off each other.
What was especially great about the event was that we had a chance to have a conversation with both Nicolas and Stéphane and learn about their product rather than read about it from a press release. It’s refreshing to see that the people are passionate about what they do and the product they deliver. They had quite a fascinating story. Chef Olivier Perret was behind the seafood bar, expertly shucking oysters and cracking open sea urchins for us to enjoy. Our plate was never empty, which is how the Divas like it!
The oysters were from Îles de la Madeleine, they were salty and delicious, served with lemon and lime wedges and the traditional red onion mignonette. The sea urchins, some with spines still moving were also from Quebec. They were rich, slightly sweet, a little briny and worked well with our PUR vodka cocktails. It was all served on sea asparagus, a Diva favourite, and definitely something everyone snacked on between bites and drinks.
It was surprising at how much the vodka-based cocktails complimented the seafood, almost more so than a glass of white wine. And that is exactly what the team behind PUR Vodka wants to show people, and they succeeded!
Our favourite blogger Day Jobs and the NightLife popped in for a quick hello and cocktail. It’s always a good night when he’s around! We planned our next dinner together in which the menu, not surprisingly, involved just as much alcohol as food!
In 2011, PUR Vodka won the prestigious award for best Vodka, all without having a single bottle on the shelf! And the team hasn’t looked back, winning many awards since. So keep your Wednesdays free because every Wednesday in October, Renoir is offering their Oursinade et Fruits de Mer night featuring cocktails by PUR Vodka. What makes this more interesting is that PUR Vodka is a locally made product, from the corn to the water, to the entire 3-month process to produce a batch of vodka.
It is a young team behind a young product but they have a very clear vision of their future and from what we tasted, it is a success story.
