Nothing fazes Montrealers, especially not the weather! So when Newtown had its official terrace opening, it was no surprise that the place was packed despite the jacket and scarf-worthy weather. It was a balmy 10 degrees in May!
Diva #2 and the boys of Day Jobs & the Nightlife arrived at the Crescent street restaurant ready to try out the new Mojito bar and Latin inspired menu. If you’ve never been to Newtown, you’re missing out on a great view of downtown Montreal from their rooftop terrace. But never mind the view, who doesn’t love a mojito bar? Newtown is offering many variations of the mojito including the Mora Azul with blueberries, the Frambuesa with strawberries and the El Pimm’s, which was very refreshing and full of bright mint.
Since it’s summer, you need a refreshing bite to go with your cocktails! You can’t get any fresher than a plate of ceviche made right in front of you at Newtown’s ceviche bar set up inside. We left it to the chef to decide what he thought was the best combination, but you could custom order your dish with any of the ingredients they had on hand.
And the ceviche was spot-on. Full of shrimp, scallops and salmon, it was garnished with creamy avocado, red onions, lemon and herbs and perfectly seasoned with espelette pepper. Seafood and cocktails is all a part of summers in Montreal.
Out on the terrace, where we were huddled by the heat lamps, some goodies were being passed around. This included two types of empanadas, one with spinach and cheese, and the other with beef. The empanadas with spinach and cheese were piping hot and very filling. The dough was a little thick but it kept all the ingredients tightly pocketed.
We also tried the beef tacos. It was filled with shredded beef and topped with red onions, peppers and plenty of chillies to warm us up on the terrace. The taco had plenty of flavour and a crunchy shell acted as the perfect vessel for these ingredients.
It was another great opening event by Tracey Brooke PR. The chilly weather didn’t stop the crowd from enjoying the new mojito bar and the new menu items at Newtown. Hopefully summer weather returns and we can enjoy the Newtown terrace which is open till 1 am from Monday to Thursday and till 3 am on Friday and Saturday.
