Diva #1 can only compare a visit to Mr. Puffs to returning to her father’s village in Greece. It’s the place where everyone knows your name, you run into familiar faces, sometimes too many in one visit, and everyone is pleasant and relaxed. Puffs, traditionally called loukoumades (Greek doughnuts), are generally the norm for nice kids from Laval to bring them to the homes of the kids from Montreal as a treat that isn’t readily available in the 514.
But Mr. Puffs is so much more than a fun Greek dessert spot. Although she had eaten a ton of puffs, Diva #1 had never actually been to the little shop on Notre-Dame in Laval. But Peaches, the Hellenic Queen of Chomedey opened her eyes to this fun little independent coffee shop. With a Freddo Cappuccino that tastes like it was made in Greece by the beach, and delicious tiropites that are flaky and stuffed full of cheese, Diva #1 and Peaches started frequenting Mr. Puffs on their lunch break.
These delectable little balls of dough are deep fried like doughnuts to make puffs. The traditional Greek way is to enjoy them with honey but Mr. Puffs offers different toppings like sugar, maple syrup, creamy caramel and chocolate hazelnut. Our favourites include creamy caramel and chocolate hazelnut, and they will even do half n’ half in one box so that you don’t have to choose just one topping.
They even serve a Greek Frappé which is hard to find outside of Greece as well as varieties of this beverage such as a Frappé float, or shake. They also serve traditional soft serve ice cream in a cone or sundae, or you can indulge in the Mount Olympus sundae (how very Greek) which is puffs with ice cream and toppings which include caramel, chocolate or berry. Alas we are simple girls, we love going to Mr. Puffs for our cold coffees with a crispy phyllo tiropita, all while sitting outside in what feels like a Greek village with a cigarette if it so suits you.
Of course when we aren’t being calorie conscious we love to order a few puffs with caramel or chocolate hazelnut, but lately we have been trying our best to watch our figures. They are absolutely decadent! On a really good day Katina Chardonnay and the Sun God, who are also Chomedy residents, and Mr. Puffs supporters, can also be found outside of this coffee shop with Diva #1 and Peaches.
Mr. Puffs also does catering for weddings and you can see them at many Montreal events such as Osheaga, the Montreal Grand Prix, or fundraisers, as they are very involved with the community. You can even order a more decorative platter of puffs for the holidays; it’s something more original than the usual desserts. Open from 10 am to 9 pm every day, they are a true Greek coffee shop that opens a little later (not for early risers) but stays open late. Greeks aren’t morning people but they are certainly evening people!
This little coffee shop and dessert shop has recently expanded to include a food truck that can be found roaming around Montreal and Laval. Peaches like to follow it around town; she’s Mr. Puffs’ biggest supporter and is planning on leaving the Sun God for a juicy employee that has caught her eye in this little coffee shop. But that’s a story for another time! So head over to Mr. Puffs, it’s like watching a Greek soap opera with good coffee, baked goods and, of course, puffs.
