Modavie

Modavie threw a lavish event to celebrate its newly renovated interior and its new association with the Université de Montréal’s Jazz program. With live jazz and blues music playing on site, seven days a week, it’s the perfect atmosphere for jazz and blues aficionados. Montreal’s emerging musicians from the Université de Montréal’s Jazz program will also play twice a month, keeping things fresh and interesting. With a coffee bar and a private second floor, Modavie is perfect for large groups, yet it still retains that bistro feel.

Modavie, Old Montreal Restaurant - WineBesides an ode to blues, jazz and R&B, Modavie is also considered a wine bar with an impressive cellier. Part of the Experience Old Montreal family, Modavie is absolutely fabulous, and they know how to throw a good party. Our night always starts right if charcuterie and cheese is involved. Nicolina Servello, food stylist, struck again with an impressive table of cured meats and cheese.

Sour cocktails in martini glasses, wine and other mixed drinks were being passed around. The Divas went to this fabulous Modavie event with Sweet Pea from Montreall.com, P’tit Soeur, and our favourite of the boys from Day Jobs & the Nighlife. Sweet Pea parked herself at the charcuterie table and had to be pried away with promises of cocktails and other snacks that were being passed around by the staff.

Modavie, Old Montreal Restaurant - Martini CocktailWe met Lorenzo, the cordial manager who spoke to us of the renovations and the general Modavie experience. The lamb chops were a favourite of ours, cooked to perfection with oregano, a very Greek method of seasoning lamb chops. The lamb came with a wonderful tangy dipping sauce for added flavour, and the waitress saw our love for these lamb chops so she returned multiple times to indulge us.

We already double checked, the lamb chops are available on their regular dinner menu! As is the foie gras torchon with a pear and porto chutney, another favourite of ours. Generous slices of foie gras torchon lay on individual crackers with a sweet pear and porto chutney. It was divine!

Gentleman Jack was the featured alcohol of the soirée. It’s more refined than regular Jack Daniel’s, although, to be honest, we don’t usually drink JD. But the in-house mixologist converted us with a cocktail called the New Yorker that is similar to a whiskey sour but with a splash of red wine. Alright Modavie, you impressed us!

In between wine and cocktails, we ate this absolutely delicious mini lamb burger. On Modavie’s regular menu, the lamb burger is a main dish that comes with feta and a side of fries with spicy aioli sauce. We were treated to lamb sliders with goat cheese, the meat was so tender and the bread so soft, every time we saw the waiter go by with the lamb burger sliders we longingly looked his way for more.

P’tit Soeur, ever the finicky eater, loved the smoked salmon on crostinis with crème fraiche, capers and dill. A refreshing treat that’s also on their regular menu, the crème fraiche was perfectly creamy and the smoked salmon absolutely delicious and fresh.

We were very impressed that Modavie chose to feature canapés that mimicked their actual menu. When many restaurants host events they rarely prepare canapés off of their menu, so you do not always feel like you received a full impression of the actual food in the restaurant. This was not the case at Modavie!

Modavie, Montreal Restaurant - Jack Daniels Gentleman JackThe mixologist was soon getting fancy, we were enjoying the night that was only enhanced by the fabulous music, and life was lovely. Of course we couldn’t keep Sweet Pea from the charcuterie table for long, but who are we kidding it was gorgeously presented, and delicious, and we couldn’t get enough of it either!

We would definitely be interested in returning to Modavie, experiencing more of their bistro fare, some wine, and all in that perfect jazzy ambiance. The Experience Old Montreal group’s restaurants consistently offer good food in varied atmospheres and their events always leave you yearning to return. And all that jazz…
