As different as we all are, there are some memories, especially childhood memories that remain the same for all of us. They evoke a simpler time when our biggest concern was whether or not we could sneak in another cookie before dinner without getting into any trouble.
Let us introduce you to MLT DWN, a new restaurant from a team of brothers that is serving gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, all made on site. This is fast food comfort food, and by fast food we mean that it’s quick to come out of the kitchen, this isn’t junk food. These guys came all the way from Ottawa to impress Montreal with their unique grilled cheese sandwiches. And you know that we love a good grilled cheese!
We met Sweet Pea of Montreall.com at the opening of their Mont-Royal East location and were greeted by two incredibly friendly brothers, Ali and Rahim. They gave us a quick rundown of what they were doing before we enjoyed many samples of grilled cheese from their menu, as well as samples of the cheeses that they use in their sandwiches.
MLT DWN made a great first impression with our first grilled cheese of the night, their lobster grilled cheese. Filled with pieces of sweet lobster, it was a delicious sandwich and one of our favourites. The lobster was in a rich creamy sauce with scallions, mustard seeds, and more, but the adornments were minimal so that the lobster really stood out!
“Herb Chicken: Herb chicken, roasted red pepper, provolone, smoked gouda, spinach, lemon aioli on sourdough” 7.95$
Another favourite of ours was the herb chicken, filled with red peppers, spinach and two cheeses, provolone and gouda. This made for a flavourful mix that didn’t interfere with the other ingredients like the light lemon aioli or the fresh spinach. The sourdough bread was the perfect choice for this hearty sandwich.
This southern treat was delightful, plenty of tasty pulled pork with their house made BBQ sauce. Caramelized onions were a great addition to this sandwich. Mlt Dwn used a jalapeno jack cheese for that added Southern flair, and an aged cheddar. We loved it!
The holiday grilled cheese is pure comfort in each bite, like a forkful of turkey, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce all in one! The turkey was moist, the mix of brie and harvati was lovely, and the cranberry apple butter was perfectly tart! And the best part? No tryptophan induced food coma afterwards.
“Rstd Veg: Portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, arugula, herbed goat cheese, provolone, spinach & balsamic glaze on 12 grain” 7.95$
The roasted veggie sandwich is great for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. It’s reminds us of summer days spent grilling on the BBQ, sipping cocktails and lounging by a pool. Distraction aside, the grilled cheese uses both goat cheese for the customary tang that we love in grilled veggie sandwiches and provolone cheese which added a nice smoky flavour.
We had the poutine made with waffle fries which made us giddy because as ethnic children, we weren’t allowed such frivolous food items in the house. And though we’re not big fans of poutine in general, we enjoyed this one made with a very rich gravy, and the customary squeaky cheese curds. These boys from Ontario know something about poutine!
Who knew you could make a dessert grilled cheese? We found out that you could at MLT DWN, with their cheesecake grilled cheese. This sandwich had a nice temperature contrast with the hot grilled crème brulée French toast, slightly warm at the center, with a cooler raspberry sauce that was nice and tart.
MLT DWN Montreal is a great place to satisfy that grilled cheese craving. You can select from one of their many creations or even create your own, choosing your bread, fillings and sauce. They also have plenty of side dishes including the poutine, fries and salads. The space has some whimsical touches, like the art by a local artist and box cheese graters as lights. If you love cheese, and love grilled cheese sandwiches the way we do, you’ll enjoy Mtl Dwn, trust us!
