M: Brgr is the Divas go-to place for burgers. It is trendy, the cocktails are wonderful and you can make your own burgers. For some this means bacon, cheddar cheese, pickles and lettuce and tomato creating the typical All-American burger. For others, it means eating burgers at the local university hangout (sorry A!).
For the Divas this simply won’t do. When we think of burgers, we think of Kobe beef, foie gras, truffle shavings and oyster mushrooms. Sure M: Brgr is expensive, but they don’t even deny that, this IS the home of the 100$ burger and it is a night out on the town. This is not the ol’ mom and pop diner serving a greasy burger and fries, so get over it M: Brgr haters. It may be expensive, but somehow you always need a reservation and always end up waiting for a table; you just can’t compete with a damn good burger. Period. You may complain about the price, but somehow, everyone always end up back at M: Brgr.
The Divas walked in to the chill atmosphere of M:Brgr on Drummond and were seated in the back on their black and red banquets. Our waitress was very friendly and quickly took our drink order. We started with the strawberry mojito pitcher, a hockey night special, and loved it! Then we chose the pitcher of Citronade which is an adult lemonade made with Bacardi Limon, Absolut Citron, Triple Sec and Lemonade. A delicious, refreshing cocktail that wasn’t too strong but definitely tasty, and we easily lost track how much we were drinking. This lead to some gawking of the oh so cute manager that Diva#1 went to high school with, followed by an appropriate amount of giggling and a blast down memory lane.
While enjoying our drinks, we decided to split a main and a burger. The Divas had been to M: Brgr before so we knew what to expect and what we wanted. If you’re not in the mood for a burger, or maybe you’re looking for a little side dish to go with your burger, check out their Mac n’ Cheese options. This time we ordered the potato chip crusted truffle Mac n’ Cheese with porcini mushrooms. It should come as no surprise that we ordered this dish and on our last visit with Bellatrix, we had tried the Pulled Pork Mac n’ Cheese which was delicious.
The dish was great. The second it hit the table in its little cast iron pot, the scent of truffles intoxicated the Divas (not that the lemonade was helping). And they definitely do not skimp on the truffles in this dish but you have to really love truffles to appreciate it. And if you really need a truffle fix, you can add the truffle carpaccio as an extra. But we warn you, it might be overkill. The chip crust added a nice crunch that made the Mac n’ Cheese plate original. We added the porcini mushrooms as an additional treat but they were almost non-existent, which was a disappointment. Our advice is to just order the regular Mac n’ Cheese since it doesn’t warrant ordering the mushrooms as extra, or opt for the lovely pulled pork Mac n’ Cheese.
Along with our Mac n’ Cheese came our burger, which we had created ourselves and anxiously awaited. Being Divas, it’s hard to overlook certain menu items, especially when they can be combined to create what we deem as the perfect burger!
We chose the Foie Gras burger, with Kobe beef, truffle carpaccio and truffle aioli, and we added grilled oyster mushrooms. We purposely left out the cheese because it wasn’t necessary with ingredients as decadent as those! It is very easy to get carried away at M: Brgr and end up with…well…a 100$ burger.
The burger was dripping goodness. The generous portion of foie gras was rich and creamy and the meat was tender. The oyster mushrooms were plentiful and added a great, extra meaty layer of flavour. The burger was messy but worth it; we could almost hear birds singing … ok, maybe birds singing is pushing it but it’s a damn good burger, one definitely fit for the Divas!
Generally we believe that it is sacrilege to not add cheese to your burger, but believe us, this combination is so amazing that cheese would only take away from the perfect combination of flavours. Hmmm, maybe M:Brgr will put it on their menu and call it the “Diva Brgr” … just a thought. And of course no burger would be complete without a side of Moishes pickles and fries. At M: Brgr the fries are an additional cost but you have the choice amongst traditional matchstick fries, fried onion crisps, sweet potato fries, etc. On a previous visit, we had ordered their delicious sweet potato fries and some of their dipping sauces which were great. This time we chose the plain matchstick fries and since the truffle aioli is an accompaniment to our burger, we used that as our dipping sauce.
We didn’t have room for dessert but M: Brgr is famous for its deep dish chocolate chip cookie, something to try on our next visit. This is a great place to grab a bite to eat after shopping downtown, it’s not fancy and a great option for a girls’ night out. Many say that it’s too expensive for a burger but you do not go to M: Brgr for a plain, all-American burger; you go there to treat yourself and indulge. This is not the plain burger that you’re used to eating on your break between your university classes, this is a serious burger for those who love to indulge. After all, a little foie gras goes a long way!
