Mayfair Cocktail Bar

Mayfair Cocktail bar evokes the romanticism and British elegance of the Victorian era. It is unlike other bars in Montreal because its décor is modeled after a 19th century English tea room and their menu also has a British influence. Many of their signature cocktails are even infused with tea! We first went to Mayfair Cocktail Bar past the witching hour when it becomes more club-like, it was as expected, but we were curious to see how it fared for a 5 à 7.

Perfectly decorated, there is definitely a lot of attention to detail in both their signature cocktails and the décor of the place. Diva #1 doesn’t like the traditional girls’ night out, she loves a bit of sausage in her entourage. But Mayfair was perfect for this Girls Night which included Sweet Pea, Peaches and Katina Chardonnay – and none of those foul mouth truck drivers are that feminine anyway! They are pretty and fab, but they’re animals.

Peaches and Diva #1 got there first and instead of waiting like the ladies our mothers had hoped we would become, we ordered cocktails before Sweet Pea and Katina Chardonnay had a chance to arrive. We were recommended the Goji Kiss and the Green Velvet cocktails from the very attentive bartender who never allowed us to be without a cocktail the entire night. The Goji Kiss was made with gin, St-Germain liqueur, gojis berry juice, chai tea and both lemon and cranberry juice. It was tart and delicious!

The Goji Kiss was delicious but the Green Velvet is what burned our loins and we often returned to this cocktail throughout the 5 à 7. Hendrick’s gin (which is our absolute favourite), Absinthe, some fancy tea that we never even dreamed of, cucumber juice, fresh lime and the most creamy celery and coriander mousse made up this aromatic drink. It even tasted healthy! So we felt less bad ordering it multiple times.

The food came out in perfect English tea room porcelain trays, keeping up with the theme of the cocktail bar. The beef sliders with a touch of mayo and pickles were divine, we couldn’t get enough of them. We were famished and we were soon eyeing a large bowl of fried potatoes in a spicy mayo at the end of the bar. We didn’t want to look like gluttons, but we are what we are. Diva #1 and Peaches soon shimmied it over to everyone with the promise of returning it to the people we had swiped it from. We never did, the potatoes were quickly devoured!

We were soon asked by one guy if we were Greek… since 3 out of 4 of us were Greek we glared at him and asked why. He told us that we stole the potato wedges from down the bar and we were yelling and gesturing for the last hour, so we had to be a bunch of Greeks. He too was Greek and ended up knowing Katina Chardonnay… god damn Greeks all know each other! Of course we continued being loud and drinking too much, which only further perpetrated the stereotype.

The cocktails were flowing (the bartender really was superb), and we noticed little details in the cocktails, like cucumber infused balls of ice in the Duke of York cocktail. The canapés included salmon tartare in an endive spear with green peas, puff pastry wrapped sausage with a drizzle of honey mustard, and smoked salmon and cucumber tea sandwiches. All the canapés were served on 19th century inspired English tea room trays. We felt fabulous and the next round of drinks would always arrive as we were just finishing the one before.

Our favourite cocktail of the night, and one we returned to frequently, was the Daisy Twist with rum, porto, sherry, fresh lemon juice, a Kusmi Traktir infused tea and Porto jelly. We don’t even like brown alcohol and we absolutely loved this cocktail. The bartender set a piece of orange peel on fire to add another element to this heavenly cocktail that wasn’t too sweet. When they called for the last round, Peaches ordered a few shots to make sure that we were extra wobbly as we left Mayfair Cocktail bar! She’s definitely a girl who knows how to party 😉

We’re not girls who love clubbing, so when we first saw Mayfair late at night it seemed like your typical club but with a prettier décor. Now having come for a 5 à 7, we would definitely return! Everything was fabulous, and the ambiance, cocktails and attentive staff were exactly what you would want from a cocktail bar. We left more than a little boozy, loving life and ready to cause some trouble!
