After a night of drinking in excess, the next morning is clouded with many half regrets, thoughts and ideas, one of which is “I need to detox”. And what better way to get a detox started than with healthy food? At the very least, you can always hope the placebo effect kicks in!
The Divas and Peaches found themselves in such a predicament yet again. A boozy night made for a hazy next morning at work. When lunch rolled around, we pretended to be adults and opted for a healthy choice.
Mandy’s Salad Bar in Westmount is a small space with a counter where you order your salad and either take it to go or eat it on one of the few tables set up outside on their small terrace. We were lucky enough to nab one of the outside tables to enjoy our lengthy lunch.
You can create your own salad or choose from the ones they have on the menu and add additional ingredients at will, including grilled chicken, tuna, turkey, tofu, smoked meat, eggs or bacon at an additional cost. They even sell Jus Pur juice, a healthy cold pressed juice that is all the buzz around Montreal for those who do not want to sacrifice taste for the healthier option. These days we can’t get enough of Jus Pur juice!
Besides Jus Pur they have other delectable treats like a salad of the month, delivery for the surrounding areas near the restaurants, and perfect take-out containers for when you need to eat on the go. Diva#1 once enjoyed a Mandy’s salad while stuck in bumper to bumper traffic!
A traditional Cobb salad is filled with avocado, Roquefort cheese, a hard boiled egg, tomatoes and more. The Cobb salad at Mandy’s has a few variations and is equally delicious. The addition of hearts of palm, baked pita chips (a signature twist at Mandy’s) and mushrooms adds more substance to this filling salad. We also opted to add in grilled chicken, but this is almost unnecessary because it is filling and satisfying. And while we missed the Roquefort cheese in this salad, you can easily add blue cheese for an additional cost.
We satisfied our blue cheese love with the Waldorf salad, which originated at the famed Waldorf Astoria in New York. Traditionally made with apples, walnuts and celery with a mayonnaise dressing, Mandy’s had their own take on this salad. Paired with their tangy balsamic vinaigrette, for a healthier alternative, it balanced perfectly with the sweet pears, apples, and cranberries. The walnuts and blue cheese added helped create the perfect sweet and salty combination.
The Roma salad is a favourite with its Mediterranean influence. Black olives, dried figs, bocconcini and basil make for a very Italian salad. The fresh herb taste is prominent and welcomed amongst the multitude of vegetables. The sun-dried tomato and basil vinaigrette is not overpowering but you still get a little acidic bite from the sun-dried tomatoes. We also added grilled chicken to this salad for extra protein.
Mandy’s Salad Bar just opened their third location on Crescent Street in downtown Montreal. Of course we had to try it to ensure that their salads were just as good as the original Westmount location. A bigger salad bar restaurant with more outdoor seating right on Crescent, this spot is sure to be a success with tourists.
On one visit we tried their October salad, again served with the classic balsamic vinaigrette, greens, toasted pecans, goat cheese and pear and dried cranberries for sweetness. We love the mix of cheese and fruit and we love Mandy’s for all of their interesting combinations.
You know how we feel about salad; it’s something fed to the food we eat! But at Mandy’s, the salads are filling and satisfying and customizable. Enjoy a salad with a bottle of fresh Jus Pur juice and you’ll be ready for another night of drinking after your latest detox!
