La Diperie is making soft serve ice cream sexy again. Kids who grew up in the 90s grew up eating creamy soft serve ice cream, it was available everywhere and we adored it! Remember Pizza Hut’s soft serve ice cream bar? But then we grew up and soft serve became plebeian and soon gelato was the craze, it came from Italy, the flavours were complex, and it was oh so patrician. So ice cream parlours began making their own gelato, it became trendy and soft serve became something for kids, a thing of the past; it just wasn’t “good ice cream” anymore. Until…
La Diperie opened up and they reminded us exactly why soft serve ice cream is not just for kids. So on one particularly humid day, Diva #1 and Goldie went for ice cream. A small unassuming parlour, La Diperie has a cute little terrace and usually a pretty decent line to get some of that sexy ice cream. Goldie complained that the line was long and Diva #1 considered bludgeoning him to death, but alas they had their ice cream!
There were so many fun options to choose! First you chose a size which ranged from mini to large, and then you add a dip and toppings for an additional cost. We opted for medium sized cones and we chose one of the dips and topping off of their menu, although you can mix and match and create your own combinations. Diva #1 was intrigued by “Le Rocher” which sounded like it would be the ice cream version of Ferrero Rocher chocolate, and trust us, it was exactly that! Vanilla ice cream was dipped in a praline chocolate dip with roasted hazelnuts. It was absolutely delicious and Goldie even mocked her for eating it so quickly!
Goldie opted for the “Madelaine’s Oreo” dip which had both an Oreo dip and crushed Oreos for added childlike pleasure. Other fun options included an ice cream cone with a milk chocolate and caramel dip with crushed almonds, a maple dip with pecans, and a strawberry cheesecake option that Goldie had been eyeing. You can also enjoy your ice cream in a waffle cone, but make sure that you have cash on you as they don’t take cards. Definitely a place to return to, La Diperie certainly made soft serve sexy again.
We walked away from La Diperie and went off to enjoy the Plateau. We found ourselves at this amazing park with a Victorian style fountain just blocks away from La Diperie. Of course Diva #1 and her love of Montreal history meant that she had to look up its story. This fountain is called Fontaine du Carré Saint-Louis in Saint-Louis Square of the Plateau, an area rich in Victorian architecture, it was the perfect spot to enjoy our La Diperie soft serve.
