The warmer weather is near and with it, outdoor parties! The Divas were invited to the media launch of Fitzroy’s Garden Party and we happily obliged. But before you get jealous, it was an indoor garden party!
As soon as we walked in, we spotted a little enclosure on a table with four kittens. Yes, kittens!! And yes, we did our best to take them home with us, naturally. While they were beyond adorable, we’re not so sure having 4 one-month old kittens at a party with loud music and boozy patrons is such a good idea. Actually we think that having kittens at a bar is an awful idea.
You know the cocktails are great when mixologist extraordinaire Lawrence Picard is behind them. Each one was refreshing, using citrus and mint to brighten them up. We tried them all and we particularly enjoyed the Wanderlust.
The food at Fitzroy, located on Mont Royal, is surprisingly good and we say this because it’s a billiards bar that has a few bar snacks, it isn’t a restaurant. We started with the salmon tartare, piled high on a tortilla chip. The salmon was surprisingly spicy, an aspect we loved, and the tortilla added a nice crunch.
There were a few grilled cheese sandwiches throughout the night, one being the mac n cheese grilled cheese. Yes, carbs on carbs and we didn’t care! These mini grilled cheese were filled with creamy mac n’ cheese that oozed out with each bite. There was a little drizzle of BBQ sauce for some tang, and some pieces of bacon in the grilled cheese.
The other grilled cheese was quintessential Montreal – a smoked meat grilled cheese. Complete with mustard and a slice of pickle, this was our favourite of the night and the wait staff knew because they kept coming back to us! The smoked meat was warm, the crunch of the toast and the tang of the mustard left us wanting more!
You can‘t be at a bar and not have burgers on the menu. The Fitz burger was delicious, with iceberg lettuce, pickles, bacon and cheese. The meat was moist and the bun held everything together, which we always appreciate. We’d go back for this dish, it was the perfect bar snack.
Next up were some vegetarian options. The cauliflower tacos were good. The cauliflower was roasted to bring out more flavour and topped generously with parsley for a little green. Not our favourite, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.
The chorizo taco was served with a generous helping of red cabbage slaw on top to cut the spicy taste of the chorizo. The slaw was crispy and vinegary and the oil from the chorizo added a nice taste to each bite, giving it a little bit of needed fat content.
We ended our night playing a few rounds of billardini and enjoying more cocktails. Fitzroy might be advertised as a bar and pool hall, but rest assured, you’ll love the food and the cocktails too. This is definitely one place we’ll be coming back to!
