This little lunch spot /corner store is perfect when you want an inexpensive yet delicious bite. Dépanneur Le Pickup is both a casual diner and a traditional Quebec dépanneur that provides the usual chips, beer, wine, cigs, ice cream, tea, soft drinks, etc. But Dépanneur Le Pickup is so much more; its diner-like counter over an open kitchen has delicious and unique sandwiches and burgers to suit every palate. Even vegan and vegetarian options!
We already reviewed these guys last year but we absolutely love it so we recently went back to try new items and enjoy the nice weather on their picnic benches outside. It’s sort ofin the middle of nowhere, off the main foodie area of Saint-Édouard, but it’s worth the adventure.
Their baked goods (which we have tasted on numerous visits) include the creamiest yet super sour lemon bars, oatmeal and raisin cookies that will make you tear up remembering your childhood, and even Portuguese natas. Everything is fresh and absolutely delicious, and we often can’t control ourselves at Dépanneur Le Pickup and order a few treats for the road.
On one particular visit, Peaches, Katina Chardonnay and Diva #1 got lucky and saw the brunch / breakfast burrito as one of their daily specials. Easily the best breakfast burrito that Diva #1 has ever tried with plenty of eggs, melted cheese, beans, peppers and topped with fresh homemade salsa. Of course we opted to add bacon on top of it all, and the bacon was crispy, just the way we like it. With a generous heaping of homemade guacamole and sour cream, this Mexicali brunch burrito was right up our alley.
Another popular sandwich at this little dép is the steak sub. It was out of this world and on the freshest submarine bread. Thin slices of steak were seasoned and cooked to perfection with cheese and mayonnaise for added creaminess. Fresh lettuce and tomatoes were stuffed into this sandwich and we lathered it in hot sauce for that extra kick that the Divas love.
Since we were dabbling in the realm of breakfast, we ordered their potatoes which are similar to diner-style breakfast taters. They were seasoned with a hint of either paprika or cayenne pepper for heat and served with a tangy mayo for that perfect finish. Dépanneur Le Pickup offers their potatoes all day (not just for breakfast) and the same goes for their breakfast burrito, which is perfect for us since we love eating breakfast at lunch and dinner!
Of course we always order the haloumi grilled cheese. We can’t say no, nor should we ever have to say no to this perfect vegetarian sandwich. Lightly seared haloumi cheese is paired with plenty of mint coleslaw that is good enough to eat on its own. The bread is toasted, the cheese slightly melted and we really can’t think of a better cheese sandwich.
The pulled pork sandwich at Dépanneur Le Pickup is a classic, and we hear that the faux pulled pork sandwich is a winner too but we love our pork…well we love it to be from an animal. But we’re traditional like that! The pulled pork has a hint of a sweet BBQ sauce but it’s missing some kick so we always add hot sauce. Served on a soft bun, the sandwich is stuffed to death with pulled pork that has been slow cooked.
And if you’re smart, as we so rarely are during the hours of brunch, you will end your lovely meal at Dépanneur Le Pickup with one of their decadent ice cream sandwiches. Their homemade chocolate chip cookies are absolutely unforgettable and they are stuffed full of Bilboquet ice cream. Messy to eat but oh so worth it!
Check out this little dép, they sell tons of local products, delicious sandwiches and treats, and you can even get your usual dépanneur needs. We just can’t seem to get enough of this lunch spot!
