Our majestic Sensei can’t handle both Divas at the same time, he blames us for his gray hairs, but we think they make him look debonair. Every now and then he checks up on us to make sure that we’re not in jail, or doing something that will land him in jail. He loves us deeply!
Diva #2 and Sensei had a lunch date at Chez Tousignant, a gourmet casse-croute in Little Italy, from the power duo behind Impasto and Pizzeria Gema, Michele Forgione and Stefano Faita. The chef de cuisine at Impasto, Yann Turcotte, is now behind the counter at Chez Tousignant, serving up authentic diner fare, all with homemade ingredients.
Chez Tousignant offers beer, soda and juices but for that authentic diner feel, grab a milkshake. They have both vanilla and chocolate. The vanilla milkshake was delicious and tasted like soft serve ice cream, but of course, everything is gourmet and you can see the flecks of vanilla bean.
The milkshake was the perfect accompaniment to our diner fare. Our only complaint came with the fries. Served in a lined, brown paper bag to keep the grease from seeping through, there was just something missing. Maybe we’re too used to dirty good greasy fries? These just fell short.
The grilled cheese at Chez Tousignant does not skimp on the cheese! The bread is perfectly made on the flattop, giving the bread an even golden brown colour and great crunch. And the cheese just oozes out with every bite. A classic American grilled cheese sandwich.
You can add extras like cheese, bacon, coleslaw or Tousignant sauce to the hot dogs and hamburgers. They offer several types of hotdogs, including a Michigan dog and Tousignant dog. All hot dogs are made in house along with the potato bun. We opted for the Smokie, a cheese dog with mustard and coleslaw, topped with slices of pickles. You could really taste the smokey flavour of the hot dog, the cheese was slightly melted, the bacon was a nice addition, and the pickles added a nice acidic bite.
The burgers are all made in house with local beef and Chez Tousignant’s delicious homemade potato bun. The cheeseburger was topped with tomato, onion, lettuce, pickles and Tousignant sauce. Every bite is a little bit of heaven – the burgers are that good! The meat has a nice crust from the flattop grill, the ingredients are simple, and the Tousignant sauce is perfect. And while it might get a little messy, the potato buns holds it all together.
There was a lot of buzz surrounding the opening of Chez Tousignant, and it’s well deserved. The atmosphere is great and it’s a great spot to grab a quick bite or get take out. They also serve BLTs, a club sandwich, rotisserie chicken, desserts and more. Stop by Chez Tousignant and sit in one of the window booths or along the counter for a quick bite in that old school diner atmosphere.
