We’re passionate people and because we love food, that passion is usually geared towards what we eat. This may make us gluttons but we aren’t alone! The boys from Chef on Call love food too and we loved chatting with them about their passion. A love of late night eats and quality food brought these guys together and with that Chef on Call was born in 2009.
What started out from a student apartment, bloomed into a little spot that mainly catered to delivery as opposed to a restaurant but now they have a new location on Park Avenue where you can stay in and enjoy the pinterest inspired décor and delicious food for a fraction of the cost of most restaurants. They’re open until 4 am on Thursday to Saturday, so even if you don’t live downtown, you likely party downtown and with that comes a love of late night eats!
We tried a bunch of things on their menu and there is still so much left! The Gourmet Burger is a beef patty topped with Monterey Jack cheese, caramelized onions, bacon and their garlic mayonnaise sauce. The bacon is perfectly crispy, with plenty of toppings that don’t dominate the delicious burger, so you still taste the meat.
We also tried the Spicy Crunch chicken burger that was breaded just like Chef on Call’s famous chicken tenders, with more of that Monterey Jack cheese, more crispy bacon, hot banana peppers and homemade spicy mayo. The Spicy Crunch was our favourite of the two burgers that we tried! But these guys really know a thing about fried chicken.
Known for their chicken tenders, after we tried one of these delicious and crunchy tenders we soon understood why they were so popular. Fried to perfection, and not too greasy, we loved the panko crusted white chicken tenders. Moist white meat surprises you after that crispy coating. We took some home and fought over them the next day!
We fell in love with their curly fries, crispy and delicious! We also loved their sweet potato fries and the onion rings were a nice treat. They also provided us with a bunch of dipping sauces to enjoy with the sweet potato fries, curly fries and onion rings. We even dipped our burgers and Cuban wrap in the sauces, they were that good! Our favourite was the garlic and dill, the spicy mayo and the chef’s sauce! Although the honey mustard was also a treat and we liked the Hawt Fire sauce too. Never mind, they were all delicious!
Chef on Call even has vegetarian options like their Cuban Wrap that’s stuffed with plenty of avocado and sautéed mushrooms. This wrap also had their roasted garlic mayonnaise dipping sauce and plenty of Monterey Jack cheese for added creaminess. Chef on Call has a few healthy alternatives, and vegetarian options including veggie burgers, hearty salads and pasta dishes. They really do have something for everyone and at all hours of the day and night.
Obviously we ate too much! And we washed it all down with their shakes, which are out of this world. Not too thick so you can actually drink it with a straw and not eat it with a spoon. We had Oreo and Reese’s; not too sweet, they were perfect diner-style fare. With another smaller location on Bishop Street, check out Chef on Call, you won’t be disappointed!
