Charcuterie, wine and cheese are just a few of our favourite things! Everyone kept talking about Buvette Chez Simone and their fun terrace in the summer, their affordable wine list, and their delicious cheese and charcuterie plates. Everyone just seemed to be having an all-encompassing good time when they went to this little wine bar on Ave. du Parc. The pitfall that everyone complains about is that they do not take reservations so you cannot show up with a big group and plan a rowdy night but of course that would never stop Diva #1!
So Diva #1, Whitey, Peaches and Sweet Pea waited 45 minutes for a table at Buvette Chez Simone. Throughout the night we added to our little table of 4, you know, a chair here and there. Soon we had added JB, the Sun God, a Greek immigrant, a random guy from another life, and our token Asian friend. The table was a little snug to say the least but the best adventures are unplanned and chaotic.
We ordered our wine and then a bunch of charcuterie in half portions for the girls. The boys were left to fend for themselves! The bresaola was our favourite of the meats, although the lonzo, which was recommended by our waiter, was quite impressive. Whitey made us order the smoked meat (of course) but it was surprisingly delicious. We were also recommended the rillettes de canard which was delish, and the chorizo and porchetta were also a treat.
We ordered the gruyère, Gouda, tuyau de poêle and Tomme du Haut-Richelieu in half portions as well. The cheeses were remarkable, our favourites being the Gouda and Tomme du Haut-Richelieu which were divine! Served with pickled red onions, gherkins, pistachios, beets, capers, grapes, etc – it was the perfect cheese and charcuterie plate. Even picky Whitey was impressed!
But we didn’t stop there. With beef heart on the menu, what else could we order? Thick pieces of grilled beef heart lightly seared and red in the middle arrived before us. Beets in an au jus sauce were perfect with the meat. The foie gras was not apparent but the grilled beef heart was tender and cooked to perfection. It went very well with the full bodied red wine that our waiter had recommended. Of course Sweet Pea was salivating because the dish had beets … she is one strange girl!
The tortellini with braised pork was served in in an au jus sauce with generous shavings of pecorino cheese. It was a simple dish made with fresh pasta and tender pork. At this point in the night we were getting boozy, and even a little inappropriate. Diva #1 was attempting to molest the Greek Immigrant who was on to what she thought were suave moves. Peaches and the Sun God tried to help tie him up for Diva #1 but he was spry. Alcohol always leads to excessive plotting and more than a few “romantic” advances by Diva#1!
Our last dish was the mouth-watering mushroom vol au vent with a crème fraîche mushroom sauce, green bean pods and marjoram. We were so very impressed with this large vol au vent that was decadent and creamy. The puff pastry was bursting with mushrooms and we instantly regretted not ordering two of these!
Last but not least as we polished off more wine and we ordered the mini sugar doughnuts that came with a chocolate and molasses sauce for dipping. A nice little treat, perfect for sharing, it was a great end to our meal.
Buvette Chez Simone is a lovely place for a fun bite to eat with lots of wine – what else is there in life? The Divas love wine, cheese and charcuterie and this place is a guaranteed fun night out on the town. It’s rowdy and full of fun people; we know, we spoke to a few! We would just love you guys a little more if we could reserve a table, and then we wouldn’t have to sneak people in like fugitives! Since we never take no for an answer anyway.
