Food and wine are staples of the Italian culture. And like most Italians growing up, Diva #2’s first taste of wine was either mixed with gingerale at Nonna’s house or helping Nonno fill the damigiane with wine in the basement, it’s tradition!
These are the memories that linger with some of Montreal’s Italian community when they share their love of wine and food with us. We were invited to a private wine tasting at Buonanotte, in conjunction with Panoram Italia Magazine. It was a celebration of the 8th edition of their wine guide as well as the cover story featuring Buonanotte’s own Lino Lozza. Doesn’t he just look delicious?
We arrived with Sweat Pea of Montreall.com and Day Jobs and the NightLife to find a selection of eight wines ready to be served alongside bites of food that were being passed around. The wines were all from various regions in Italy, both red and white, and range in prices. Lino Lozza is known for his impressive wine cellar at Buonanotte; Italian food and wine are his passion.
The food was all catered by Buonanotte and in between wine tasting and speeches, we indulged. Delicious salmon tartare was being passed around in crunchy cones, bruschetta with plenty of tomatoes, olives and artichokes was packed with flavour. We loved the little mozzarella in carozza, small bites of deep fried mozzarella in a bread coating, resting in a simple and fresh marinara sauce.
Also served with the fresh marinara sauce were the mouth-watering meatballs; everyone couldn’t get enough of Buonanotte’s delectable meatballs. And, of course, no soirée is complete without oysters, this time, in the form of creamy Rockefeller oysters! With plenty of fresh focaccia, the food was delectable, as we have grown to expect from Buonanotte.
Overall, it was a great night. We learned a little about some of the wine regions of Italy, all while sampling wines that were new to us. We also enjoyed the food catered by Buonanotte. Lino Lozza has done a tremendous job building the wine list at Buonanotte and they are only one of four Montreal restaurants to hold the distinction of a two-glass designation from Wine Spectator. Be sure to check out Lino Lozzo’s cover story in the latest edition of Panoram Italia Magazine.
