The roaring European twenties just made Old Montreal that much more magical. Meet Bord’ Elle, described as a boutique bar and eatery that looks exactly like a bar from that magical era. The décor is so nice that we don’t know how they will keep it up, with plenty of knick knacks and little pieces decorating the walls and shelves that we hope that the boozy Montreal clubbers don’t ruin it.
With two mezzanine balconies (with bars) overlooking the grand hall, it’s a huge venue and rather dazzling when you first step in. We did not know what to expect and we were astounded by the scene that was set before us. They have a whiskey parlour in one mezzanine, a gin bar in the main grand hall and a champagne parlor on the second mezzanine, all odes to the fabulous roaring 20s but we assure you, this gin isn’t bootlegged!
There was a woman singing from the champagne parlour down to everyone in the main hall, and plenty of flappers adding to the ambiance. The main hall also had a swing suspended in the air and a show was provided for that extra bit of fabulousness. We were there for their opening event, so we aren’t sure how it is going to be on a regular Saturday night but we hope they keep up all the splendor and lavishness that we saw at their event.
The cocktails were flowing and god damn delicious, we tried two of the gin based cocktails, one was with cucumber, basil, red tonic and soda, with Hendrick’s gin (our favourite). The second cocktails was with strawberries, black pepper, blue tonic and soda – with more gin, of course! We spent most of our time in the great hall enjoying the cocktails and atmosphere of the opening night.
A few canapés floated around, we loved their beef tataki, salmon tartare and the stuffed mushroom caps. Their full kitchen wasn’t ready yet so we just tried a few bites and enjoyed the cocktails, we’re curious to try out more of their dishes. If atmosphere is half of it, Bord’ Elle has a 10/10 for setting the mood, this Great Gatsby style bar is sexy, and we already feel the itch to return.
This place isn’t really about the food, it’s about the cocktails and the entertainment. It’s definitely the most beautiful bar that we’ve seen in Montreal, we just hope the twenty-something-year-old wild clubbers who spill their drinks and have the propensity to puke in the bathrooms don’t ruin it and make it into a trendy supper club. Especially because Bord’ Elle has gold painted toilets! We loved the bar-like atmosphere and the cocktails, hopefully it remains fabulous.
