Abu Elias

Abu Elias is a halal butcher shop and sandwich counter in Ville St-Laurent. All their meat is cooked over charcoal so though it takes 20 minutes for the meat to fully cook and your sandwich to be prepared, it’s worth it for that perfectly smoky charcoal flavour. Not only do they sell delicious sandwiches, they also sell raw meat (marinated or not) for you to enjoy at home, or you can order giant meat platters that are charcoal grilled and ready for your next party. Their charcoal chicken is delicious, and they sell whole roast chickens too!

They have different specials that change regularly, their pita is always fresh and their hummus is the best in the city. We actually can’t imagine where you would get better hummus in Montreal, it’s THAT creamy. It’s a condiment for their sandwiches and you can buy it to enjoy at home. They sell other Middle Eastern treats, some frozen, others fresh, and all inexpensive. We often order the lamb, filet mignon and beef kafta sandwiches, but the shish taouk chicken sandwich is definitely the most popular.

They serve their sandwiches stuffed with pickles for added crunch and acidity, and they grill your pita sandwich once it has been wrapped up and packed full of ingredients. Kafta is a Middle Eastern style meatball that consists of minced meat, at Abu Elias they use beef, onion and spices. They even offer a raw kafta sandwich which we are intrigued to try. We love raw kafta so the concept is intriguing. Of course you can also order the meat in ½ kg and 1 kg – they are a butcher shop after all!

They sell great fresh pita bread, as well as garlic potatoes that are heavenly. Unfortunately the potatoes often run out when we get there after work. They even offer a garlic potato sandwich, perfect for someone who doesn’t want to eat meat. The sheep’s tongue sandwich is a delicacy at Abu Elias, not for the faint of heart, but it’s actually delicious. We never tried the sheep’s brain sandwich because we don’t like the texture of brain, but it’s one of their specialty items.

“Tabouli” Petit 3.99$ Grand 6.99$

Their tabouli is always fresh and the perfect side salad to their meat heavy sandwiches. Abu Elias has created a name for itself as a great butcher shop and charcoal grilled sandwich spot beyond Ville St-Laurent. Another one of their specialties is the soujouk which is a spicy Middle Eastern sausage that is heavenly when cooked on charcoal and put in a pita sandwich.

Since it takes a while to cook the meat on charcoal, call and place your order in advance, so it’s ready for you when you get there. There are a few seats to eat inside, but it’s mainly a to-go sandwich counter and butcher shop. Julia Child considers a relationship with a good butcher essential in cooking meat, so check out Abu Elias, talk to them about what you’re cooking, and enjoy a sandwich while you wait, you’ll definitely be in for a treat.

Food was very nice, but bit expensive. I had 1 kilogram of mixed kaftan and lamb meat, 1 piece of Arayes and 1 Tabboule (ready made) and I paid 75 $. Compared to other restaurants it is much higher, and the “seating” was very tight.
